Main Sheet Shackle eye on Boom end fitting wearing through
Hawk Moon II Trapper 500 Hull Number 376.

Hi Guys,

Note the Boom has been converted to slab reefing.

The problem is that the eye, on the outer end of the boom, to take the main sheet pulley block shackle is badly worn. † The upper topping life eye is in good condition but the ďRINGĒ will not spin on the boom (?).

There are 3 Screws or possibly bolts through the fitting at the end of the boom and I donít know if these are original or not. † †In addition I donít know if these are preventing the Eye Ring from spinning on the boom. On further inspection I donít think the bolt shanks are interfering with the Ring it may just be ďVeryĒ stiff.

Looking at the second photo, see next post, you may be able to see the shank of the screw / bolt passing through the fitting but I donít know if it is interfering with the Eye Ring. †I donít particularly want to have to remove the boom outer end fitting completely, what are your thoughts and any guidance please?

Regards Heber     I am having difficulties uploading the photos, will try them separately

Thanks Nick, I learn all the time. †It is a pity my retention span is so limited.
Hopefully this will be the second Photo.

Now your post with the links has gone so I can't add it for you. We had the same problem on securus but that had a proctor mast and we could just roll it round.

Just use a tape strop on the boom instead, around the boom or direct through the eye and shackle the block to this. It removes the wear point. Spectra is perfect for this.

Hi Ronan,

Thanks for your reply.  I have done that and it has taken the pressure off the main sheet Eye.

I have been recommended to sit the boom end in a dish, of a mix of Acetone and hydraulic fluid, apparently a very good release agent, and see if this loosens up the bond.   I think I will wait for the end of the season before doing this.

Regards and thanks.
