Dimensions/length of Rudder
07.04.2019 at 01:37:27

The rudder stock broke and the rudder floated away last fall, I need to make a replacement, probably a slightly different hydrofoil, but I'd like the dimensions of the original if possible, thanks in advance

How did that happen and how did you get back to your mooring.

Not that it has anything to do with my query but if you must know the rudder stock corroded inside the rudder and sheared off, after 40 years of service, I anchored in 30 feet of water and got towed by TOWBOAT US. Can anyone help me with the dimensions or not?

Yes indeed, but not with boat afloat. If you're happy to pay for lift (Deacons Hamble) you will be most welcome to measure. Alternatively boat will be ashore late Nov/December.

Heron 237 - may I ask whom you are accusing of being boorish or sarcastic? If you are aiming your arrows at me I await your apology as I made you a genuine offer re lift out.
Incidentally you will also need to get the aerofoil profile of the blade sorted out. As a start the profile of the keel will be a good guide.
You may also care to reveal your name, rather than hiding behind Heron 237.

Sharing info on how your rudder fell off is useful info for owners so probably worth telling others so they donít suffer the same misfortune.

Iím not confident in taking good accurate dimensions so didnít try and measure my rudder and give you duff information, which Iím sure you would have criticised me for after seeing your demanding replies on this thread.

Our 'friend' told us the rudder stock "broke" but gave no more detail.
In my experience all Trapper rudders seem to suffer ingress of water. The inner void was filled with foam of some sort during manufacture.
I had heard of stainless stocks having mild steel tangs inside the actual rudder - the latter being two halves glassed together.

In Star Trapper's case I had a new rudder moulded some years ago as a precaution. Old one was opened up, horrible soggy mess inside. Tangs were stainless after all & old metalwork incorporated into new rudder, which is still happily in service.
New rudder was filled with GRP so possible water access kicked into touch.
